Gorguts has returned!!!!! After a 12 year absence, the
Canadian tech-death maestros have returned to pummel our faces and confound our
sense of what death metal is. Luc Lemay has written another masterful batch of
head spinning death metal that hundreds of tech-death-core 22 year olds could
only wet dream about. His songs have a way of combining technical virtuosity of
not just guitar work but every instrument in the band with astounding song
writing. Too often bands simply try to write the most complex riff or drum
pattern that basement dwelling music elitists try to spend hours emulating
while forgetting there is this little thing called a song that the majority of
people actually like to listen to. The songs tend to travel from mind bending
guitar work to ultra-brutal death metal that is enough to start a pit in the
middle of Sunday’s farmers market. Take “Forgotten Arrows” for instance, the
song moves from frenetic riffs with hyper speed drums underneath to moody,
slowly lumbering pacing that quickly moves back to the brutalness. The album
takes the listener on a journey, expands their minds with the technical
expertise, yet allows the non-music playing folk out there (cough-me-cough) to
truly enjoy the songs themselves. <i>Colored
Sands</i> is a fantastic comeback album that will truly stir up mixed
emotions from across the underground. But the bottom line is this is damn fine
death metal.<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
One of my favorite past times these days is to look up one
particular song that I like on the Youtubes and from there click on songs from
bands that I have never heard of. This is a great way to discover solid new
bands as well as find some crap that you will gladly avoid in the future. Let
me take you on one such journey beginning with the technical stylings of Voivod
and their classic track “Killing Technology”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="300" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/FXV7anYI0TE" width="400"></iframe><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
<br />
Alongside this great track was “Heresy” by <b>Paradox</b>. This band has apparently been
around since 1986 and has only taken a break in the 90’s before coming back
with 4 full length albums in the 2000’s. Here is a track from their second full
length entitled <i>Heresy</i>.<o:p></o:p><br />
<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="300" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/olQy6exMemc" width="400"></iframe><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br />
<br />
Next up was “Harbinger of War” by <b>Hellcannon</b>, a newcomer thrash band from Buffalo New York. With only
1 full length under their bullet belts, if this song is any indication, many
great things are coming from these brutes.<o:p></o:p><br />
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="300" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/OGJVMH1UrOY" width="400"></iframe><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br />
<br />
Following up that hellish firestorm is <b>Nuclear</b> with their song “Belligerence”. I have a gripe with this
song right of the bat; it is a direct rip off of “Blackened” by Metallica!!!!
It isn’t even a case of, it kinda sounds like the song, it is almost a note for
note ripoff of the main riff. However, they do play it well so I will take a
listen to some of their other material.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<br />
<br />
And to end this little trip is Stormwrath with their track “Swords
of Armageddon”. This is thrash for the simple minded, nothing too complex just
straight to the face pummeling. While not my favorite track of the list<br />
it does
seem like it would be a killer live band.<o:p></o:p><br />

I started my path similar to other folks around my age and listened to the more mainstream stuff (Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, etc.) before my brain was fully covered in the filth that is underground death, thrash, and black metal. Throughout my years I have listened to countless bands and witnessed more shows than I can even remember (thank you alcohol!). As a result of these adventures my tastes in music have grown and changed many times over giving me so many different experiences that I am forever grateful for. There are, however, a few bands that started me on this journey and continue to guide me along, one of those is the almighty beast Slayer. These legends have been a shining light for metal since 1981 and have been in the spotlight since Show No Mercy shredded the collective assholes of listeners everywhere. And the reason I bring up this band that undoubtedly just about every person is aware of, metalhead or not, is because another legend of music has passed on, guitar great Jeff Hanneman. This mythical guitar hero succumbed to liver failure and the world of music will never be the same because of it. Hanneman was the writer of some of the greatest riffs and songs that the metal world has ever known and it is truly sad news that we will no longer hear any new music from this genius. The man helped put the thrash genre in the world’s collective ears and continued its legacy for new generations year after year. So today we pay tribute to a great musician, and from what I read, away from the stage a truly great man.<br />

I was in the need to hear some ridiculously br00tal music
lately because I have been listening too much to the fuzzed out stonery sounds
of Orange Goblin, Clutch, and many others. I have nothing against those bands,
I absolutely love those bands and their groovy sounds however every
metalhead needs some time to sit back and get blasted by some blast beats and guttural
growls the likes of which the conservative right wing has never even imagined.
Enter Hungarian band Kill With Hate. Judging a book by its cover, which is a
terrible thing to do, I figured that this band would satiate by blood lust in a
furious form. And to a certain extent they did!<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
Beginning the album <i>Voices of Contention</i> with a choral chant and some wicked didgeridoo
work, my salivary glands are working at maximum capacity in anticipation of the
heaviness to come. When track number 2, "Submersion", commenced the br00talness appeared and
got my head a-bobbing from the grooves. A solid riff, while not entirely
original moved the track along quite well and led to the growls my thirst for
heaviness was looking for. And towards the end of the track a nice little guitar
solo emerged to give the song a little bit of sonic dynamism. However, as the
album goes along, it seems to be a little more of the same. Each of the songs contain a
good riff, some heavy as a dinosaur turd drumming, and brimstone inducing
roars. The banging bass lines do add a
little bit of depth to make the songs come alive. I just wish that the songs would vary a little
bit to make them a little more memorable. This may not be exactly what brutal
death metal is all about, however this writer would like to hear a little bit
more. In the coming years this may indeed be a band to watch as they bristle
with talent. Looking for more to come from these hungary (haha see what I did
there?!?!) young chaps in the future.<o:p></o:p><br />

And now, we have the first song! A true doom song, slow paced and heavy, it is only a taste of what is to come.<br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
When one thinks of brutal music, death metal is probably the
first subgenre that would pop into your tar sludged minds. However, at first
listen to the latest long player (and I use that term lightly because the
entirety of the 10 songs only takes up 17 minutes) by grindy heathens Nails, <i>Abandon All Life</i> is exactly the
definition of brutal. This album is savagely violent, harsh, and unrelenting (synonyms stolen from various internet dictionaries). The
songs move from the frenetic pace of a cat hopped up on coke being chase by a vacuum cleaner
to the mid paced headbangers that will surely cause you to buy stock in Advil
the next day. The “slow” movement of "Wide Open Wound” is the soundtrack to you
leaving a hooker’s hotel room at 3 in the morning and you can hear footsteps
walking behind you. Its just terrifying enough to make you sweat and slowly
pick up your pace. However “Cry Wolf” is that intense moment when the crazed
meth head that has been slowly following you starts to run with a fecal encrusted
screwdriver gripped tightly in his hand. These guys have the ability to
expertly combine grind, crust, hardcore, and death metal into something that
will completely drain you of all essential fluids. The LP is so damn heavy and
hits from all fronts that you would think that the singer’s fist are punching
you through the speakers. It is no
wonder that these gents were able to pen such hatred when all you have to do is
turn on the TV to understand. However, not just anyone could encapsulate that
hatred into something so morbidly beautiful. This is grind done right. <o:p></o:p></div>

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">This is a subject that I have
considered many a time, whenever I talk to people that listen to nothing except
whatever is spewed out from the radio and they try to denigrate the art form
that I love. I, though, actually listen to what they have to say and take in
their criticisms. However, they do not have the depth of knowledge that I have
when it comes to music. I know about the popular art forms they listen to
because it is everywhere and damn near impossible to escape whereas metal music
is something that has to be researched to be found, one cannot just turn on the
radio or TV and find the newest track from Prostitute Disfigurement. What I see
when I think of most of the "artists" that they bring up are people
that rely on extravagant stage shows that contain crazy light shows or
beautiful choreography. I usually think to myself, "Why do these people
need all these extra aspects in order to enjoy a musical performance? They must
not have anything innovative to offer musically to audiences." I then
start to think about the myriad of performances that I have seen in my time,
majority of those being a combination of simply band + stage = amazing time.
However, when I think of the shows I have seen by Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, GWAR,
or Opeth, they all apply either huge props, giant stage shows, incredible
lighting, or theatrics to entertain yet I can listen to their music all by
itself.....what does that mean?<o:p></o:p></span></div>

render me speechless that contain barely more than a band playing on a stage
such as Skeletonwitch, Melechesh, or Exodus. These bands rely on nothing more
than their music and energy to create a live show that is unforgettable. This
is what I think about when I think of what metal is. The brute force of crashing
their material into our ears that turns us into body slamming, head banging,
horns raising piles of human flesh. If it doesn’t get my blood flowing a
hundred times faster than it usually does, how can I consider it metal???
However, as I grow older and my wisdom increases, I tend to realize that there
is not just one aspect of music that deems something as metal. It is all that I
have talked about and more. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 6pt;">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">So what am I getting at with all these ramblings? Something
that I have preached for years, ever since I started growing up and not taking
metal so seriously, is that there is no rubric for what can be deemed “metal”.
With the cross-pollination of various sub-genres it was inevitable that we
would stumble across this conundrum. Bands such as Ghost contain musical
attributes of the originators of metal and occult rock while containing a
visual element and mysticism about them that appeals to older fans and young
ones as well. One of the main attributes that one has to consider when thinking
about what can be deemed as “metal”, powerful musicianship is a must. That is
one of the few characteristics that can be seen across all subgenres of the
metal-sphere. And those that are playing the music just for show can be picked
out of the crowd very easily, and those are the ones that do not leave a
lasting legacy. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 6pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><o:p> </o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 6pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">But above all, if you like the music, you shouldn’t have to
worry about what others think, if it’s “metal” or not. And if you stand up for
what you love to listen to, then you are the most metal person of all.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

It’s been a long time since you all have been privy to my delicate words of wisdom, my insightful bits of astuteness that stick to your brain like a gallon of sugar drenched in pancake syrup. In my long absence the human race has survived the impending Mayan apocalypse, the majesty that is the holiday season, and we look forward to maniacs hording guns and trying to hold off the gummement from stealing their assault rifles. In the midst of all this fun, the year of 2012 ended and 2013 is now in full swing. And what does that mean for all us keyboard bandits? YEAR END ALBUM LISTS!!!!!!!^%!&$!^%!!!!&^%!(&*!!!!! Who else could be more excited than metal enthusiasts spending all their time looking for the latest and greatest bands that no one else has heard of?! Now I know that this is a little later than most other sites, hell this is probably the latest one on the interwebz, but that doesn’t mean that my list is not chock full of metal goodness. It may not be the most underground list but damned if I did not enjoy the hell out of these albums. So please enjoy, debate, tell me I’m wrong, and then we can all get on with our lives. Peace out homies.<br />

<strong>Orange Goblin – A Eulogy For The Damned</strong>
<br />
<br />
This doomy, stonery band from the deepest depths of London put forth one of the best rock ‘n roll albums of the year. Pure riffage and beer fueled anger created this masterpiece of leather and spikes for the degenerate masses. If there was a playlist for Busch, this would be the band to create the drunkinest party for people who do not have the ability to walk straight anymore. <br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<strong>Allegaeon – Formshifter</strong>
<br />
<br />
Allegeaon continue to be one of this writer’s favorite bands, their combination of brutality, technicality, and melodicism make this one of the best young bands out there. How this band is not at the forefront of the underground metal scene continues to baffle me. Perhaps if they played live a little more, perhaps Seattle? (wink wink nudge nudge)
<br />

<br />
<strong></strong><br />
<strong>Asphyx – Deathhammer</strong>
<br />
<br />
What more can I say about Asphyx that hasn’t already been said? This legendary band has come forth with their combination of death and doom with disastrously heavy results. One of the first bands to combine the two genres and strive, Asphyx are legends and this newest effort continues their legacy.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/IXhyzGc7_pc" width="560"></iframe>
<br />
<br />
<strong>Aborted – Global Flatline</strong>
<br />
<br />
Teh br00talz!!!! “Fecal Forgery”, “Of Scabs and Boils”, “Expurgation Euphoria”, only titles such as this can come from one of the best Carcass loving bands around. Aborted, shakes off the shackles of post-deathcore-y album Stryichnine.213 and comes back to the brutal grindyness of previous album such as Goremaggedon. They have created a blood soaked collaboration of awesomeness and horror that deserves attention from pits across the globe.
<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/2_7ZDTU6Em0" width="560"></iframe>
<br />
<br />
<strong>Baroness – Yellow and Green</strong>
<br />
<br />
This album is not extreme in the least bit but it may just be my favorite album. The atmosphere that the Georgian group creates is one that makes the listener think and feel. Even without know what they are singing about, the songs create a feeling inside you, something that doesn’t always happen in metal. Infectious grooves and hypnotic vocals create something magical that even the hardest moshing hesher can’t refute.
<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/CFRLBhDxvyA" width="560"></iframe>
<br />
<br />
<strong>Black Breath – Sentenced to Life</strong>
<br />
<br />
This band of plucky brutes from the harsh Pacific Northwest continue to spread their infectious combination of crusty death metal that harkens back to a time when bands simply wanted to beat the living piss out of you with their audible assaults. After Heavy Breathing put the underground’s collective nut sacks in a vice, the band came forth with Sentenced to Life which was a dirty piece of ill-tempered nastiness that everyone fell in love with. <br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/g74LSUiVyf8" width="560"></iframe>
<br />
<br />
<strong>Pallbearer – Sorrow and Extinction</strong>
<br />
<br />
Not many people saw this band exploding the way they did, especially considering their brand of doom is not one that would generally create such excitement. In addition, this is their first full length!!!! What more can we expect from these Arkansian (I have no idea if that is a word) riffmasters? Hopefully something that soars even higher than this harrowing slice of hell.
<br />

<br />
<br />
Honorable mentions go to:
<br />
High on Fire – De Vermis Mysteriis
<br />
Pig Destroyer – Book Burner
<br />
Panopticon – Kentucky
<br />
Angelus Apatrida – The Call
<br />
Cattle Decapitation – Monolith of Humanity
<br />
Gojira – L’enfant Sauvage
<br />
…and many more that I cannot recall at this time

When I found it about this show a mere week before the event, I was in shock that I had not realized two amazing bands were going to be gracing the same stage with their beautiful presence. Two bands diverse enough to keep the venue full and keep the crowds attention for the duration of the night. Hipsters and heshers alike filled the floor and participated valiantly as if this were the last show that one would ever be witness to. Local black/death/thrash/crust/whatever other label you want you add on brought in the locals and new found riff master generals Red Fang brought the name recognition now that their latest album, <em>Murder The Mountains</em>, had decimated the underground. With the venue opening an hour and a half before the show even started (!) it was a little unnerving at the low attendance at first, but after local openers <a href="http://www.facebook.com/brokawseattle" target="_blank">Brokaw</a> lit a fire under everyone's asses, the crowd filled in and the bloodshed was ready to begin!<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
For almost two years now Black Breath have been darlings of the underground with their amalgation of black/death/crust metal that reminds us of Entombed and their death n' roll metallic goodness. There is a rawness to Black Breath's sound that was meant for the live stage and the band members themselves validate the sound with their primative take to the stage, simply pummeling you with audible violence that leaves you with a smile on your face. Playing several tracks off their latest album <em>Sentenced to Life</em> as well as off their breakthrough album <em>Heavy Breathing</em>, the band had the crowd absolutely eating out of their hands. Deftly maneuvering between righteous guitar work, crowd vocal participation, and sheer metallic savagery, BB enticed the willing audience in a form of savagery that only starving wolves would be able to understand. Bruality, thy name is Black Breath.<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
When Red Fang took to the stage on that fateful Friday evening I was not sure what to expect. Would this be a calm affair as the band plays doom which is not usually as dynamic and propulsive as death or thrash metal? The vocal histrionics do not always lend to people screaming their hearts out and propel the audience into thrashing like a maniac. But holy effing riff Batman! When the continuous riff after riff compilation was mixed with the powerful yet understated vocals and pounding rhythms the crowd turned into ferals beast seeking sustenance off the gravy thick sound waves that permeated the sky. Very little between song banter was needed to keep the crowd's attention as the music itself did all the work. The sound was perfect on this night, just enough muddieness to keep the grit of the music real while still clear enough to hear every single riff line. People singing along and air riffing until the point of exhaustion rendered them incapacitated. But when the next song began the energy came back. This was undoubtedly one of the best performances I have seen in a long time and I cannot wait until these doomsters make their way back to the Northwest.<br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">WHY U NO LISTEN TO ALLEGAEON?!??!?!?! Is it because their
name is almost impossible to read? Is it because you don’t like awesome music
that is capable of setting your balls on fire!?!? Whatever your reason is, you
need to settle in and listen to these melodic-tech-death maestros. Their
previous album <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Fragments of Form and
Function</i> was one of my <a href="http://www.nwmetalhead.blogspot.com/2010/11/2010-favorite-metal-albums.html" target="_blank">favorite albums of 2010</a> and I have been eagerly
awaiting their next opus.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Welcome 2012
when the Fort Collins, CO band released <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Formshifter</i>,
another grand piece of melodic death metal. Combining death metal with
classical guitar interludes and mind bending solos that make the Haldron
Collider seem like a 6<span style="font-size: x-small;">th</span> grader’s science project, the band seem to
have elaborated on their previous album and expanded their horizons to new
reaches. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><a name='more'></a></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The album starts off with “Behold (God I Am)” that begins
with very mellow guitars that slowly build into a delicious melody to get your
head banging then proceeds directly into teh br00talness. When lead throat
shredder Ezra steps up to the mic and screams, “Man’s greatest mystery; Its
human nature to believe in something” the earth starts to rumble and anyone
listening instantly raises their invisible oranges to the skies in hopes of
sacrificing their first born to the metal gods. This first track exemplifies exactly
who Allegaeon are, a band who values melody and brutality equally and uses technical
precision as their vehicle to show the world their beauty. One of the things
the band does so well is balance the heaviness of death metal and the melody of
damn good music while being extremely technical in a way that doesn’t bore the
listener. As the album continues on, the jams get juicier. "Twelve - Vals for the Legions" hits hard from the beginning with jackhammer drums underneath some tasty licks that beg the listener to bang their head. As soon as the vocals erupt the tone of the song turns evil and even the guitar solos take the song down a dark path. With lyrics telling a tale of murder and persuasion, the band unearths its devilish side. Ending the song with acoustic guitars only makes the song more intense. The entire album is solo after solo after solo with hellacious vocals that are made for the live setting. Technicality plus brutality and melody are a recipe for an amazing album and a terrific live show. Although they havent toured yet for the album, it is only a matter of time before they are unleashed and the underground consumes their tasty brand of metal. </span><br />

With new track “Horrendous Acts of Inequity” released in February of 2012, we can only hope that a new album is right around the corner. And with a high profile spot on the Summer Slaughter Tour alongside heavyweights Cannibal Corpse, Between the Buried and Me, Goatwhore, and Exhumed, Cerebral Bore are set to bore (pun intended) their brutal death metal straight into the minds of thousands more heshers. <br />

Today we spotlight Balescream, a melodic death/groove metal band from Newcastle. Getting ready to put out their first album, they have released a couple demo songs to get their name out there. For fans of Devildriver, As I Lay Dying, and In Flames, they play a chunky style of melodeath that has grooves for days. The talent in this band is very evident and I cannot wait to hear more from these guys in the future. If they move more towards the melodic death metal side of their sound big things could be in their future. So for now check out their 2 songs "Cyclonic Terror" and "Kusanagi" and raise your horns up high!<br />

Even though they have been around for so long, though recently split up in April of 2011, only 4 full lengths were ever released. However there were several demos, EPs, and splits released to give even the most heartless beasts enough to bash their faces into the wall with. And today we praise the work of these soulless harbingers of gore, enjoy!<br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">With new albums from crossover giants Municipal Waste and
power metallers 3 Inches of Blood recently being released, this is a tour that
was meant to grab you by the short hairs. Both of these beasts are known for
their live shows so it was guaranteed to be an excellent night of wailing
vocals, wailing guitars, and more stage diving than the Obese Child’s Choir of
Milwaukee on bacon grease night at the local VFW hall. And when you bring along
underground sludgsters Black Tusk, it is going to be a booze-soaked fun filled
evening! </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">When Tacoma, WA based death metal band took the stage the
venue wasn’t exactly filled but the excitement for the night’s coming
activities was definitely building. There was a solid audience for this
intrepid group of soldiers that braved the roads from way down south. When the first
riffs were played, I began to think, “Oh great, another deathcore band with
cheesy breakdowns to come very soon.” But you know what? That breakdown never
came! The band played some great melodic tech-death that horrible trend hoppers
are always trying to steal riffs from. In addition, the lead singer has some
serious chops and charisma that forced the crowd to mosh and circle pit until
exhaustion creeped into their morbid souls. Rarely do we see the local openers
illicit such a rabid response from the crowd, which can only mean there is
something to this band. Hopefully we feature them more in the future!<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> </span></o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Do you like your music dirty? Like some guy who hasn’t left
his basement in weeks while doing nothing but shredding, sweating, then bathing
in said sweat while shredding some more? Then let me introduce you to Black
Tusk! This southern sludge trio came on stage to thunderous applause and the
sheer heaviness of their three pronged sound attack audio banged everyone’s
ears over and over. Bassist, guitarist, and drummer all contributed vocals and
made the attack even more visceral. As amazing as these guys are on record,
they prove why the live setting is THE way to experience music. It was a
performance that was all hair, beard, tattoos, sweat, and metal; exactly what I
look for in my music of choice!</span><o:p><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> </span></o:p></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Every single one of us has a few bands that we will always
see when they come through town. One of those bands for me is Vancouver, BC
natives 3 Inches of Blood. One can argue that they can be held responsible for
the big wave of traditional metal bands that have cropped up in the last 2
years as they were doing it when metalcore was in its heyday a few years back. Regardless
of all that information, the band was meant for the live arena. With Cam
Pipes’s (greatest singer’s name ever!) killer vocals leading the barrage, 3IoB
scream from all angles willing the crowd to sing along, flail their fingers
along to the guitar solos, and incite pits of pure elation. It is hard to leave
a 3 Inches of Blood show without a smile on your face, and this die hard was
grinning from ear to ear.</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">“Municipal Waste is gonna fuck you up!” So sayeth the Waste,
and they make good on that promise. After such an enjoyable experience so far,
did the crowd have any energy left for these crossover gods? The answer was a
resounding “Yes!” Circle pits, crowd surfing, epic stage diving; the Waste fans
went full boar for the band and the band in turn did the same for us. Not ones
for crazy stage shows and histrionics, they simply open up the stage to any
surfer, play some ripping thrash metal, and coerce even the shyest wood nymph
into acting like a coked up ADD kid. Playing such classics as “Headbanger Face
Rip”, “Mind Eraser”, and “Sadistic Magician” as well as new tracks like “Repossession”,
MW tore up everyone’s ear drums and assholes. While in the front row I was
subject to extreme riffage and multiple kicks to the face, but they could not
have been more enjoyable. The high energy and flawless playing made for one
hell of a show and a memorable night. Municipal Waste indeed did fuck me up
that night. <o:p></o:p></span></div>NW_MetalHeadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16141449283120490630noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5750928439358911329.post-85968930891005052402012-06-20T17:49:00.000-07:002012-06-20T17:49:19.560-07:00Mid-Week Br00tal Break: Cattle Decapitation<em>Here’s a new feature of NW MetalHead Productions. We all need to take a little break during the week and what better way to take a break than listen to some br0000tal metalz?!?!?!?! Some of it will be brand new, some of it will be the clichéd blast from the past. There will definitely not be any ballads or ambient passages here, just the heaviest of the heavy. Let us get this ish started!</em><br />
<br />
<br />
“With every life I take, an ecosystem I create. Blood and guts consume my life! I am the ‘brutal gardener’, I – ‘quantity controller’, no more insane than Jesus Christ!”
<br />
<br />
Never one to disappoint, Cattle Decapitation play grindcore; technical, progressive, and br00tal grindcore. <em>Monolith of Inhumanity</em> is the newest album from these wily vets and it follows the lineage of previous albums <em>The Harvest Floor, Karma. Bloody. Karma.,</em> and <em>Humanure</em>. And even though there is a little bit of GASP! clean singing, it is not done in a way like all the craptastic metalcore clones out there. It is sure to get all the diehards and new fans moving in the pit when they start touring with Voivod, Havok, Misery Index, and Fear Factory this summer on the Shockwave touring festival. But in the mean time while they are not bludgeoning your skull in, have a listen and get ready to get br00000talized!<br />

Black metal these days seem to be all bogged down with ethereal moments, drawn out keyboards that try to be "atmospheric", or clean singing, GASP!, Marduk is continuing their mission continue what black metal was to begin with and do not fall into the trend of hipster douches trying to be trve. With their new album <em>Serpent Sermon</em> coming out and a tour beginning <a href="http://www.centurymedia.com/newsdetailed.aspx?IdNews=11486&IdCompany=2" target="_blank">now,</a> Marduk are ready to take over the black metal world that Watain have been ruling as of late. The good news here is that CVLT Nation are streaming the entire album in full <a href="http://www.cvltnation.com/exclusive-cvlt-nation-streaming-marduk-serpent-sermon-in-full/" target="_blank">here</a>. Go listen to it because the album is a very good followup to <em>Wormwood</em> and <em>Rom 5:12</em>, their most recent releases that were lauded by critics and fans around the underground. So be sure to check them out on the tour where they will definitely be playing some of these tracks and here is Seattle get there early to see local black metal beasts <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4demdWzuZ4" target="_blank">Funeral Age</a>.NW_MetalHeadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16141449283120490630noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5750928439358911329.post-33183409351357875882012-05-09T14:55:00.000-07:002012-05-09T14:55:19.070-07:00A View From The Pit: A Tale of Two Pits - Behemoth and Demon Hunter<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">A mere 7 days apart at the same venue were two shows that,
while both containing bands of the heavy variety, they could not have been more
different. The styles of the music that was played at the shows were different,
one being of a black, death, and doom variety and the other lending more toward
the melodic side of the metallic spectrum, they both brought the heavy with
diverse methods. The first show was billed to be one of the most anti-religious
affairs to ever cross this great nation with Behemoth, Watain, In Solitude, and
The Devil’s Blood, and the ceremony that ensued more than lived up to its
reputation. The second show was a send-off for Christian band Demon Hunter
before they set off for a headlining run in Europe, and the atmosphere was
starkly different from the week prior.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The big draw on the Decibel Magazine sponsored tour was
Behemoth’s return to the US after lead man Nergal made leukemia his bitch. This
made headlines all over the world and those of us Stateside could not wait for
the triumphant return. First up on the night was another band taking part in
the occult metal uprising that has been such a huge part of the underground as
of late, The Devil’s Blood. The band doesn’t so much play shows as they perform
ceremonies, with the hard thumping bass pounding the rhythm into your skull,
the dexterous guitars of Selim Lemouchi, and the haunting vocals of Farida made
the entire audience believers in their rites. Covered in blood, the band fully
enveloped themselves into their ceremony and their passion flowed through the
speakers and into our cold, dark hearts.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Next up with a shortened set because they were running late
to the show was In Solitude playing their brand of heavy metal that is brash
and all conquering. With such a short set there was little time for histrionics
so they simply set forth to rock everyone’s asses off. Always moving, the band
made sure that their riffage and soaring vocals would be sure to rev up the
crowd. I definitely need to see these guys in a full set. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">One of the most talked about bands in the live atmosphere is
a band that brings fire, blood, and animal carcasses to just about every venue
across the globe. Black metal virtuosos Watain came barreling through to
perform a ceremony of their own and show the masses their love for Satan. Bestial,
war laden, battle black metal is what they play and with corpse paint as their
war paint Watain laid waste to everyone in their path. Erik Danielsson, the
leader of the horde, made sure that the audience was fully aware of their
intent on spreading a message of anger and freedom. Although there weren’t any
animal carcasses, it was simply one of the most intense shows I’ve witnessed.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Finally, the band that we had all been waiting to see, a
band literally back from death’s door, was coming to the stage. Polish
blackened death metal heroes Behemoth were back and with a darkened stage with
blue lights embossing the background, the band entered the realm of pure metal
fury. Starting off with “Ov Fire and the Void,” the crowd was electrified and
the band was full of energy that I had not seen in a long time. The power of
Nergal’s vocals, the insanity of Inferno’s drumming, and the power of Orion and
Seth drove the music to other-worldly domains. Playing songs from <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Evangelion, Demigod, and Satanica</i> as well as the
rest of their catalogue, Behemoth played songs for people that are fans of any
step of the band’s career. The bottom line about their performance was that it
was about power and freedom, stressing that we all need to stand up for
ourselves, be strong, and strive for everything <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>we want in life. And I feel a better person
for witnessing such an emotionally strong performance.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The following week a show rolled in that was simply
different. Demon Hunter, the Seattle based Christian metal band was about to
leave on a headlining run in Europe and they wanted to play one more show in
Seattle for its diehard local fans. There were definitely some major
differences in the two shows, while they were both packed to the brim with fans
of heavy metal, they were definitely different. Instead of the bar being packed
in between sets, which was the case at Behemoth’s show, I could walk right up
to the bar any time I wanted for a refreshing PBR, my choice of drink for the
night. And instead of people watching for the best and craziest band shirts
that I normally look for at death metal shows, it seemed that 90% of the people
there were wearing either Demon Hunter or Ed Hardy type shirts. Even though
they were two different crowds, they were not any less fanatical and passionate
about their favorite band. Demon Hunter took to the stage with a thunderous
roar and fists raised to the heavens. Playing such older triumphant tracks as “Not
I” and “Carry Me Down” as well as new tracks like “Life War” the band connected each
audience member together and created a raucous pit that nearly rivaled that of
Behemoth and Watain.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Even though there were two completely different types of

attendance. I wish more people were open to giving either bands a chance even
if they don’t agree with the intentions behind the writings. This writer, for
one, has done such things and is not worried about how it looks on the outside.

Cannibal Corpse - <em>Torture</em><br />
<br />
The other night I was out enjoying a few adult beverages and generally having a great time when I suddenly felt that urge that we all have, the one to expel some fluid as soon as humanly possible. And when I approached the urinal and laid waste to the cake that quietly slept in its porcelain sarcophagus I felt a sense of extreme relief and satisfaction, one that can only be felt in that exact moment. But I began to think, is there any music that might get close to that sensation, one that makes you sigh and think, “Man that was amaaaaaaazing!”…………

Lo and behold, what was in my inbox but the newest long player from death metal legends and originators Cannibal Corpse! The 12th full length in CC’s long and hall of fame worthy career might just be that feeling of relief that I am after. The spleen splattering hatred of “Encased in Concrete” is exactly what we expect from CC, a brutalistic (yea that’s a word) symphony of pure anger. “As Deep As The Knife Will Go” is sure to be a crowd favorite at shows, from the very beginning it is trying to shove a shank through your solar plexus. The chorus will have the entire crowd banging their heads and when the solo kicks in towards the end of the song the pit is destined to be full of rage that only a reindeer in heat could imagine. The riffs on “Scourge of Iron” are a little too basic for the brand of death metal that we are used to from these wily vets. The plodding nature is very reminiscent of “Evisceration Plague” without the sense of dread that song evoked. This was one of the only low points of the album as the majority had CC’s characteristic pummeling nature, pinecone gargling vocals, and heavy as an elephants balls rhythms. Cannibal Corpse has put out another good album to add to their arsenal of debauchery. While nothing extremely different from what they have released in the past few years, it is definitely a satisfying collection of music that is very close to that urinary culmination.NW_MetalHeadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16141449283120490630noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5750928439358911329.post-43309213504413354792012-04-24T13:31:00.000-07:002012-04-24T13:31:09.894-07:00Struck By Lightning Get Crusty<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Combining the likes of metal and hardcore in the 80s was
something revolutionary; it fused the ferocious anger of every day thugs in
hardcore with the intricacies and brutality of those in the metal sphere. As time
moved on, this “metalcore” became a fad that turned metal into a joke and made
it very easy for crappy bands to become very popular very quickly. Nowadays
there is a bit of a resurgence of combing hardcore and metal into something
more crusty, something filthy that goads the listener into behaving in a primal
way that equates to man wanting nothing more than food, fire, and fornication.
Black Breath, Kvelertak, and Cancer Bats have all used this equation to create
something beautifully grimy and now Ohioan sludger-mongers Struck By Lighting have
come out with their sophomore outing <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Predation.</i>
The album is a fun filled romp of sludge/hardcore/death metal that will easily
appeal to fans across any subgenre. The album is streaming in full <a href="http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2012/04/stream_all_of_s_1.html">HERE</a> at Brooklyn Vegan and is
out now on Translation Lost. If your work day is dragging a little bit, make
sure you listen to this now for that 2:30 feeling the commercials have been
telling us so much about.</span></div>

<div>
Here we are, another Monday night show that comes on the heels of a solid sow the previous night. A week before was Onslaught following Deicide, this week its Black Dahlia Murder and guests following Dying Fetus, 3 Inches of Blood, and seemingly 100 other bands. Now I did not go to either of the Sunday shows but as I was driving to the venue I was hoping more people show up to this Monday show than the previous one. Onlsaught was playing their very first US date in the United States and the venue was empty, by the end of the night there was maybe 200 heshers there. When I walked around the corner from the parking lot this time my fears were quickly laid to rest as the line was around the corner. I hadn't seen a lineup this long to get in to a show at El Corazon in a very long time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYa9zDxmwi5cV5ANuVMsgVRF2x7mY5Px_ctP8Z_F2-RVohn8-kq3eHAFeELX03PDc_Ky1II76bw0Q4J7zwq1FBVfqCyZljxiDquMKa73Ros_8ZkM058MION6e0rYvk3zX5BZ2nDmUP7rjz/s1600/Black-Dahlia-Murder-Nile-Skeletonwitch-2012-tour.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYa9zDxmwi5cV5ANuVMsgVRF2x7mY5Px_ctP8Z_F2-RVohn8-kq3eHAFeELX03PDc_Ky1II76bw0Q4J7zwq1FBVfqCyZljxiDquMKa73Ros_8ZkM058MION6e0rYvk3zX5BZ2nDmUP7rjz/s320/Black-Dahlia-Murder-Nile-Skeletonwitch-2012-tour.jpg" width="208" /></a></div>

<br />
As I made my way through the line and into the venue I noticed something; that I, in my mid twenties, seemed to be one of the elder statesmen in the place, I flat out felt old here. But it didn't matter because Italian brutal death heroes Hour of Penance were coming to the stage. I was worried the young scene hoppers won't know the band but the crowd of young whippersnappers did not disappoint. The band was great paying tracks off <em>Paradogma</em>, <em>Vile Conception</em>, as well as their new album just released <em>Sedition</em>. Full of energy, playing to perfection, my intense anticipation was met by their incredible talent and stage presence. They didn't need to do much to rile up the crowd, their music did all the work for them, especially set ender "Misconception," the lead track off their breakthrough album <em>Vile Conception</em>. Bottom line is, these lads need to come back to the US as headliners and soon.<br />

Next up was the band I was most looking forward to, the blackened thrash stylings of Skeletonwitch. They are seemingly always on tour and yet the few times I saw that they were coming to the great Pacific Northwest I always had something come up that wouldn't allow me to go. This was my time and I was going to make the very best of it. I was up front singing along to "Beyond the Permafrost," "Crushed Beyond Dust," and my favorite "Submit to the Suffering." Chance Garnett's vocals were as blistering as they are on record and the guitar interplay tunnelled my focus for a major portion of their set, the rest of the time I was too busy thrashing my ass off. These guys have a reputation of being one of the best live acts around and it is clear why, they can simply play. They said they will be doing a headline tour in the Fall, you better believe I will be in attendance!<br />

The almost TOO heavy death metal band that sings about Egypt is one that simply has to stand on the stage, play one riff, and the whole building might collapse. Tonight the band was in top form, they were playing as tight as any band that has been around as long as they have. Playing tracks off of <em>Ithyphallic</em>, <em>Annihilation of the Wicked</em>, as well as the latest <em>Those Whom The Gods Detest</em>, the crowd was eating up every last blast beat, beastly growl, and shredding guitar solo. When the band ended with "Black Seeds of Vengeance" the crowd went absolutely apeshit crazy, chanting along with them and swirling in a vortex of sweat and aggession. Nile definitely gives new meaning to the word intensity.<br />

Now, I mentioned in the title that Black Dahlia Murder was the headliner of the evening, but unfortunately I didn't see much of their set. My reasoning for this was that I ended up imbibing too many drinks and hanging out with Chance from Skeletonwitch in the bar the whole time. I don't regret it because I have seen BDM about 4 times already and it was a good chance to simply hang out with someone from one of my favorite bands. All in all, this was one of the best shows I have been to in a very long time.</div>

Featuring the likes of Gene Hoglan, Sean Reinert, Steve DiGiorgio, and a handful of others, this 5 city tour is a benefit for Sweet Relief and is going to honor the memory of the godfather of death metal Chuck Shuldiner. Sweet Relief is a non-profit orgainization that helps musicians that need help with medical bills. Check out sweetrelief.org and if you live in San Fransisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, or Orlando be sure to go see this show, it is destined to be a great night.

Even if you don’t follow college basketball, everyone seems to get all wrapped up in the fun. Rooting for the underdogs, picking cinderellas, praying that your team’s name gets called on Selection Sunday, and wanting to do nothing but sit on the couch, drink beer, and follow the success or failure of your picks. And here at NW MetalHead Productions we have made our own metalized version of the brackets. We have drawn a bracket up for some of the best metal to come out in recent weeks or anticipated releases that are soon to be out. Do you agree with our picks or are you screaming at your screen with all the rage of a bull moose in heat?</span><br />
